In Manhattan’s Upper West Side, a suspect remained in custody following two stabbings, described as potentially antisemitic by city officials. The NYPD disclosed that one victim is Jewish, and witnesses heard the suspect shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ during the assaults.

Incidents Details

Two separate stabbings occurred near Central Park West, in an area hosting a significant Jewish population. A 57-year-old man was stabbed in the back around 1:30 p.m., remaining conscious and alert, and was hospitalized in stable condition. Nearby, a 50-year-old man suffered a stab wound to the torso and was similarly hospitalized.

Investigators are examining whether these should be classified as hate crimes, having identified Raul Morales, 51, as the suspect.

“Detectives are actively investigating the motive; however, witness statements indicate Morales shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ during the attacks,” stated Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

Community Leaders React

The attack prompted strong reactions from city officials. Mayor Zohran Mamdani referred to the stabbings as “horrifying” and praised the NYPD’s swift response. City Council Speaker Julie Menin expressed outrage, emphasizing the real fear within the Jewish community.

Assembly member Micah Lasher, representing the area, pledged continued updates, coordinating closely with investigators.

Implications and Actions

Initial police findings suggest mental health issues might have influenced the suspect’s actions, despite no known history with the NYPD.

“The fear in the Jewish community is genuine. Every New Yorker deserves safety and peace in their neighborhood, regardless of their faith or identity,” Menin articulated.

New York’s Governor Kathy Hochul condemned the incident, reiterating the state’s commitment to standing by the Jewish community.
