Chicago Bears Face Key Roster Decisions Ahead of Preseason
As NFL teams gear up for the upcoming season, training camps are in full swing. The Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers will begin the preseason with the Hall of Fame Game on August 6, broadcast on NBC. The first week of the preseason starts on August 13, setting the stage for the regular season opener on September 9. This much-anticipated game will feature a Super Bowl LX rematch between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots on ‘Sunday Night Football.’
In the lead-up to regular-season action, attention turns to potential roster changes. This week, the spotlight is on the Chicago Bears and players who might be cut during the preseason.
Roschon Johnson, Running Back
Roschon Johnson was once seen as a key player for Chicago’s backfield after he gained 352 rushing yards and scored six touchdowns in 2024. However, Johnson’s playing time dwindled last season, with just two carries across seven games.
Complicating matters for Johnson is the impressive performance of Kyle Monangai, who rushed for 783 yards and five touchdowns as a rookie. Additionally, the Bears signed Salvon Ahmed early in the offseason. These factors put Johnson’s future with the team in doubt. Come August, he may have to seek opportunities elsewhere.
Scotty Miller, Wide Receiver
When the Bears traded D.J. Moore to the Buffalo Bills, the move underscored their confidence in their wide receiver depth. With Luther Burden III and Rome Odunze heading the receiving corps, the team feels secure.
The addition of free agent Kalif Raymond and the promising performances from rookie Zavion Thomas, drafted in the third round, have further solidified the group. Although Scotty Miller was initially a smart depth acquisition, nearing the start of the season, his position on the team seems less certain. He may find himself cut or shunted down the depth chart.
Jaylon Jones, Cornerback
The Bears’ defense boasts strong cornerbacks like Jaylon Johnson, Kyler Gordon, and Tyrique Stevenson. Fourth-round rookie Malik Muhammad also brings potential. However, the team has numerous cornerbacks, a list that includes Jaylon Jones, Josh Blackwell, KC Eziomume, Dallis Flowers, Cam Lewis, Dontae Manning, and Terrell Smith, many playing similar roles.
At 29, Jaylon Jones is one of the older players among them. Chicago may release him to provide younger players with more opportunities to contribute. His experience might not be enough to secure his spot in the team.
