Obama Visits WNBA All-Stars at His Presidential Center

CHICAGO (AP) — Caitlin Clark expressed amazement after meeting former President Barack Obama, who made an unexpected appearance for WNBA All-Stars at his Presidential Center. Clark described her interaction with Obama as a lasting memory. She noted Obama praised her for handling her public presence effectively, drawing a parallel with his own journey.

Obama addressed the players briefly on the basketball court, which began operations last month. He commended their achievements and the growing popularity of the game, expressing enthusiasm as a fan. After speaking, he took a group photo with the players and individually spent time with them, including Clark.

“Some of you I’m meeting for the first time. All of you are extraordinary and I could not be bigger fans,” Obama said.

Obama also highlighted the players’ off-the-court ventures, emphasizing their positive impact on young people. He specifically acknowledged A’ja Wilson during his talk. Following this, he engaged in conversations and photo opportunities.

In a playful exchange, Obama interacted with Jonquel Jones of the New York Liberty, showcasing his own basketball skills momentarily. Jones appreciated the encounter, citing Obama as a role model.

Obama’s presence marked the court’s first use by a professional sport since its opening in June. Although unable to attend the upcoming All-Star Game, Obama reminisced about his attendance at previous games, including a 2010 WNBA event with his daughter.

Obama received a No. 44 WNBA All-Star jersey, symbolizing his ongoing connection with basketball. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert underscored Obama’s role as an inspirational figure, linking his influence to the sport.

After engaging with the players, Obama proceeded to converse with league investors and inspire nearly 100 high school girls present at the center.
