Michigan Family Faces Threats After Speaking Against Transgender Athlete in Volleyball

A Michigan father, Sean Lechner, reported receiving death threats, racist insults, and threats of violence after he and his daughter, Briley, spoke publicly about her competing against a transgender athlete in girls’ volleyball. The seriousness of the threats prompted the FBI to contact them.

Sean Lechner recounted that although they received widespread support, the family also faced hostility after raising concerns about fairness in girls’ sports. Briley, a Monroe High School student-athlete, expressed that her father handled most of the harassment after going public. She too received messages accusing her of spreading hate.

“We’ve received death threats and threats of people coming to our house or going to my father’s work,” Briley told Fox News Digital. Despite the negativity, she remains committed to her stance for fairness and safety in women’s sports.

Briley described a feeling of abandonment by political and educational authorities, stating, “It makes me feel like I’m almost on my own.” The ongoing situation has made her more cautious about pursuing education in Michigan due to concerns over policies affecting female athletes.

The controversy began when Briley unknowingly competed against a transgender athlete. A Title IX complaint was filed by her father when it was found that his daughter shared locker facilities with the athlete. Briley expressed concern over not being informed about competing against a biological male, which affected her focus during games.

The Supreme Court’s June ruling supports maintaining separate sports teams based on biological sex but leaves discretion to states. Michigan’s current policy allows for transgender participation unless state laws change. Briley acknowledges the other athlete’s situation but emphasizes the importance of protecting fairness in women’s sports.

Sean Lechner stated that the threats have solidified their determination to advocate for female athletes’ rights. “We won’t be intimidated, and we won’t be silenced,” Sean declared, emphasizing the family’s resolve to pursue fairness.
