San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car accident earlier this month, which has affected his participation in the early stages of training camp. The announcement was made by the team as training camp commenced on Saturday.
Shanahan sustained a concussion, along with a broken nose, several fractured ribs, and injuries to his hands. This information was disclosed by an anonymous source familiar with the situation, as they were not authorized to discuss the details publicly.
The team described these injuries as non-life-threatening and expressed gratitude towards first responders who were present at the scene of the collision last week.
The 49ers’ initial practice will take place on Sunday. Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Line Coach Chris Foerster will oversee the team, alongside coordinators Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris, and Brant Boyer.
Kyle Shanahan, now entering his 10th season with the 49ers, is renowned for his expertise in offensive strategies. Under his leadership, San Francisco reached the Super Bowl in the 2019 and 2023 seasons and made two additional appearances in the NFC Championship Game during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Shanahan boasts a record of 91-72 during his tenure, placing him third in the franchise’s history for total victories, trailing only George Seifert and Bill Walsh.
Last season, the 49ers contended with numerous injuries but managed to achieve a 12-5 regular-season record, along with securing a win in the playoffs. Shanahan’s performance earned him the fifth spot in the voting for the AP NFL Coach of the Year.
