Zach Top Discusses Authenticity in Modern Country Music
Zach Top shares his thoughts on the current state of modern country music, noting it now sounds “perfect” and believes some of its “soul” is missing. During an interview with Rolling Stone, the 28-year-old country singer discussed his new song, “Good Girls & Cowgirls,” and why he thinks bluegrass music is gaining popularity.
“From my perspective, it’s similar to why my music is popular now,” he explained. “For a long time in country music, everything was perfect and precisely tuned. I feel some of the soul got left behind.”
Top believes listeners are now seeking music that feels “a little more raw and real again,” adding, “bluegrass is exactly that” because when performing it, “there’s nothing covering you up.”
He cited Tyler Childers and Zach Bryan as examples of artists embracing a “very real and raw” sound, which resonates with audiences. “You’re not trying to chase perfection,” he said. “You’re trying to play good music with your heart and soul. People appreciate that, and that’s what bluegrass has always meant to me.”
Known for traditional honky-tonk music, Top is recognized as one of the younger artists reviving traditional country music. His first EP was released in 2022, coinciding with his debut at the Grand Ole Opry. He achieved a significant milestone in 2024 with his debut album “Cold Beer & Country Music.”
In 2025, following the release of his second album “Ain’t In It for My Health,” he received accolades such as ACM New Male Artist of the Year and CMA New Artist of the Year.
Regarding his celebration after the CMA win, Top remarked, “I brought a beer up on stage, read between the lines. I have my road crew and band with me. We’re going to celebrate together.”
Top’s latest song, “Good Girls & Cowgirls,” is set for release on August 21, along with another new track, “Other Side of Hurtin’.” Despite releasing new songs, a date for his highly-anticipated third album remains unconfirmed, though he hopes it will arrive in April.
Describing “Good Girls & Cowgirls,” he said, “It’s a fun song exploring the contrast between a ‘good girl’ and the wilder side of women. I think folks will enjoy it. It’s planned to be on the new record next spring.”
