Former Honduran President Returns Home Amid Legal Battles

Juan Orlando Hernández, the former president of Honduras, returned to his homeland after being pardoned by the United States. He was greeted by a significant crowd at the airport.

Hernández’s return comes four years after his extradition to the U.S., where he faced narcotrafficking charges. Hundreds gathered outside Palmerola International Airport to welcome him back. His private plane landed at 8:32 a.m., and family members including his wife, children, and mother awaited him at the terminal.

He arrived accompanied by his U.S. lawyer, Renato Stabile, and three Honduran generals: Tulio Armando Romero Palacios, Willy Joel Oseguera Rodas, and Javier René Barrientos Alvarado. Stabile was the first to disembark, followed by Hernández, who greeted the crowd by raising his hand. He wore a white shirt and blue jeans. He first embraced his mother, Elvira Alvarado, then kissed his wife, and hugged his children and granddaughter.

After their reunion, they all kneeled by the runway to thank God for his return. Hernández took the opportunity to thank airport staff before proceeding to immigration for clearance. Exiting immigration, he was escorted in a pickup, heavily guarded by security to the airport’s outskirts, where supporters chanted his name. As he shook hands with the crowd, he expressed gratitude, stating, “I am happy, overjoyed to be in my land… I’ve longed to return and didn’t expect it to be like this. I thank God.” National Party flags waved in celebration.

Following his airport reception, Hernández joined a convoy heading to a ranch where friends and supporters awaited him. On another stretch of the road, he addressed the crowd from a stage, calling himself blessed by God for his supportive family, and acknowledged the prayers for his return to Honduras.

Emphasizing his innocence, Hernández claimed the accusations were retaliatory actions related to his extradition endeavors. “We must unite as Hondurans to advance our country,” he urged. Initially sentenced to 45 years in the U.S., he returned after a pardon from President Donald Trump, which stemmed from doubts regarding the fairness of his trial.

Free since December 1, 2025, Hernández sought reunion with his wife Ana García and children, who faced suspended American visas. However, a warrant from Honduras’ Supreme Court hindered his return until it was lifted on December 8, 2025. His Honduran attorney expressed intent for Hernández to face pending charges of fraud and money laundering willingly.

A favorable court ruling allowed Hernández to announce his return to Honduras. Now, he is scheduled to appear before a judge on August 3 at 9 a.m. in a case tied to corruption known as Pandora II. This scheme involved ex-officials from 2010 to 2013 who facilitated the misuse of over 288 million lempiras (more than 11 million dollars) in public funds, according to Honduras’ Special Prosecution Unit Against Corruption Networks (UFERCO).

UFERCO alleges that Hernández, during his presidency from 2014 to 2022, unlawfully received at least 62 million lempiras (over 2.3 million dollars) to support his campaign through deceitful practices like phantom companies, proxies, and fictional contracts. “I respect my country’s institutions, but I am convinced this case lacks legal basis. I am innocent and the truth will prevail,” Hernández stated.
