Trump’s Expectations from NATO Allies

Donald Trump’s demands from European NATO allies are clear. He expects them to contribute fairly to the alliance, take charge of their defense, and assist in the Middle East conflicts, particularly regarding Iran. European leaders have admitted to underfunding defense and have promised to increase spending. However, Trump’s demands have faced significant discontent from Europe.

Ukraine’s Active Role

Unlike some European partners, Ukraine is eager to meet American expectations. Recent military actions, like the strike on an Iranian vessel, show Ukraine’s active stance. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has offered to share intelligence on Russia assisting Iran. This marks a pivotal moment, suggesting that the old assessment of Ukraine’s value to the U.S. is outdated.

According to Jacob Parakilas, a Research Leader at RAND Europe, Ukraine is proving its worth to the U.S., prompting a consideration of how Washington will respond to this positive signal.

U.S.-Ukraine Intelligence Sharing

For over four years, Ukraine has been engaged in defending against invasions, yet it manages to support the U.S. against Iran. Recently, Ukraine targeted a vessel involved in military shipments linked to Iran in the Caspian Sea. This move destroyed one ship and killed a sailor. Zelensky also announced sharing intelligence on Russia’s aid to Iran, showing a proactive approach.

Iran reacted strongly, rebuking Ukraine’s actions. They criticized Ukraine despite having supplied drones to Russia that attacked Ukrainian cities.

NATO Reluctance Versus Ukraine’s Initiative

NATO allies have consistently resisted U.S. requests to military actions in the Middle East. European counterparts have avoided sending military forces or planning aggressive moves against Iran. Conversely, Kyiv is showing a cooperative stance, knowing full well that appealing to Trump’s morality might not work.

Ukraine’s transactional approach could appeal to Trump’s preference for deals, hopefully leading to a stronger U.S.-Ukraine partnership.

Defense and Industrial Partnership Potential

Europe is increasing defense spending, aiming to reduce foreign weapon dependency. Meanwhile, Ukraine proposes a defense-industrial collaboration with the U.S. Ukraine’s combat experience combined with the U.S. industrial capacity promises mutual benefits.

The agreement allows Ukrainian drones to be tested in the U.S., potentially leading to joint manufacturing. This partnership reflects a more balanced reciprocation between Ukraine and the U.S. than previously existed.

Assistance to Gulf States

In addition to offering the U.S. intelligence, Ukraine is advising Gulf Arab states on air defense, following attacks by Iran. Ukrainian experts have been dispatched to the region to provide insights from their defensive strategies against Russia.

Though Kyiv still needs U.S. technical aid, it is offering valuable knowledge in exchange, presenting a partnership rather than just seeking support.

Challenges and Opportunities

Ukraine’s actions against Iranian-linked targets might escalate tensions. Such moves can risk drawing the U.S. into more extended conflicts. However, Ukraine considers these risks given its current war with Russia.

Ukraine doesn’t seek to create a new enemy for the U.S.; it emphasizes that Iran is part of a broader adversarial network. Kyiv argues for continued U.S. support, presenting itself as a vital frontline ally against these threats.

Trump seeks allies willing to fight their battles, develop weapons, and share intelligence. In Ukraine, he already has a partner meeting these criteria.
