New York Times reporter Jonathan Swan, during an interview with “60 Minutes Australia,” expressed thoughts on President Donald Trump’s ambitions, describing them as “Napoleonic.” Swan suggested that Trump’s political resilience should prompt journalists to approach their coverage with humility.
Swan, along with fellow reporter Maggie Haberman, talked about their book, “Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump.” They speculated on the remainder of Trump’s term, with Swan urging journalists to remain humble when predicting political outcomes.
“Even if Democrats take the House, they may not be able to significantly affect Trump,” Swan said. He remarked on Trump’s financial standing and legal protection. “His family’s wealth has grown; he has Supreme Court immunity. The likelihood of a conviction, even with impeachment, is low.”
Swan noted, “Trump’s political downfalls have been forecast many times. If you don’t acknowledge his survival skills, you risk delusion. He regenerates and has two and a half more years as a dominant leader with no plans to step back.”
“TRUMP SURVIVES: BATTLING THE MEDIA, FORMER ALLIES AND ASSASSINATION ATTEMPTS,” Swan highlighted.
Trump’s impact on American politics remains significant, according to Swan. He discussed potential future actions, mentioning Trump’s interest in Cuba. “Changes in Cuba’s regime are possible, but predictions are uncertain,” Swan stated.
Swan recounted a White House meeting where Trump showed a document comparing him to historical strongmen like Napoleon and others. “The document focused on power, comparing Trump to figures such as Stalin and Hitler,” Swan shared. The document omitted moral considerations, emphasizing Trump’s powerful leadership.
Swan added, “Trump aspires to be recognized like Napoleon, an iconic one-name figure shaping history. His comparisons are with historical power figures, not previous U.S. presidents.”
In response, the White House highlighted Trump’s ongoing efforts for a stronger, safer America. Spokeswoman Olivia Wales said, “President Trump works daily to achieve prosperity for America. His focus is on America’s greatness.”
