Kentucky Governor Urges Senator McConnell to Prove Fitness for Office or Resign

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has called on Senator Mitch McConnell to demonstrate his fitness to serve in Congress or resign. Beshear, a Democrat, addressed his demand to McConnell in a formal letter. The governor asked the 84-year-old senator to communicate directly with the people of Kentucky about his capacity to serve.

‘I am calling on you to directly and verbally address the people of Kentucky and provide proof of your capacity to serve, or resign,’ Beshear wrote to McConnell.

McConnell, a Republican, was discharged from the hospital recently after an extended stay. Despite his discharge, he has not yet received medical clearance to leave the rehabilitation facility where he is undergoing physical therapy. This situation was outlined by his office on Monday.

In a statement, McConnell acknowledged that his recovery was ongoing. ‘I’m still working hard to get back to my full schedule of work in the Senate and in Kentucky, keeping up with intense physical therapy per my doctors’ orders,’ he said. ‘Unfortunately, that means I won’t be able to make it to Fancy Farm, Kentucky, this Saturday. As always, I appreciate all of your continued well wishes, and I’m looking forward to getting back to the Senate and to Kentucky soon.’

McConnell’s absence from a significant political event in Kentucky and important Senate votes has been confirmed by his office.

He was hospitalized on June 14 due to a fall at his home, which was later disclosed. His ongoing struggle with childhood polio impacts his mobility and remains a factor in his medical recovery.

Beshear has been pressing for transparency since earlier this month, when he initially requested more information about McConnell’s health status. Without detailed updates, speculation about McConnell’s condition has persisted.

The governor also reached out to Senate Majority Leader John Thune, requesting an investigation into McConnell’s fitness if the senator does not demonstrate his ability to continue his term.

‘All of this speculation and even this letter could have been avoided with a minimal amount of transparency,’ Beshear wrote to Thune.
