Detroit Lions Release Cornerback Terrion Arnold Amid Legal Troubles

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell addressed the team’s decision to release former cornerback Terrion Arnold. The decision, coming just before training camp, was termed “unfortunate” due to Arnold facing felony charges.

“You never want to let go of a player, especially someone you’ve been around for a while and drafted,” Campbell stated. “It’s unfortunate, but we made the move we thought was best for us.”

The Lions ended ties with Arnold after a Florida judge set his bail at $1 million over eight felony charges. Arnold is accused of orchestrating the abduction and beating of three men.

Prosecutors allege Arnold arranged for the men to be attacked after suspecting they stole $100,000 in cash and luxury items from him. In earlier statements, Campbell indicated the team believed Arnold was not involved based on available information.

“I feel like we’re going to be good here,” Campbell told reporters. “I’m going to trust what the kid said.”

Arnold’s attorney, Harvey Steinberg, claimed in court that the prosecution lacked evidence linking Arnold directly to the actions of his associates.

Cornerback D.J. Reed, Arnold’s former teammate, expressed continued support for him. “He’s a great human being, one of the better men, better teammates that I’ve met in the league,” Reed said. “It’s an unfortunate situation, but he’s a great dude. A great human being. His energy is always positive. I reached out to him. He’s doing good.”

Arnold, selected by Detroit with the No. 24 pick in 2024, faced challenges in his rookie season with 15 starts and no interceptions. Last season, he was limited to eight games due to a concussion and shoulder injury, managing one interception. Before his release, the judge exempted him from wearing an ankle monitor, which would have restricted his game participation.

Looking forward, the Lions continue preparations for the upcoming season without Arnold. Campbell expressed confidence in the team’s current cornerback roster.

“We feel pretty good in that room with the competition between veterans and young guys,” Campbell said, noting D.J. Reed, Rock Ya-Sin, and Roger McCreary as key players. Ennis Rakestraw also aims to contribute after overcoming injuries.
