Riley Gaines Discusses WNBA’s Approach to Activism and Women’s Sports

The WNBA recently attracted attention following Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham’s stance on keeping biological men out of women’s sports. Responses from the league have been intense.

Riley Gaines, a former collegiate swimmer, addressed the issue on her podcast, “The Riley Gaines Show.” She emphasized her commitment to advocating for women’s sports, saying, “My entire brand has been built on protecting women’s sports. I genuinely mean it. Women should have the opportunity to compete and succeed in their chosen sport.”

“The WNBA seems determined to undermine itself,” Gaines commented, referring to the league’s ongoing struggle between sports and activism.

Gaines suggested that the WNBA faces a choice: focus on being a professional women’s basketball league or act as an activist organization with occasional basketball games. She observed that the current direction leans toward activism.

She also criticized the broader societal implications, noting the troubling optics of adults, including a team owner, confronting teenagers over common-sense beliefs. “When grown adults feel emboldened to pick on teenage girls, there is something seriously wrong with society,” Gaines stated.
