Sophie Cunningham Addresses Controversies Surrounding Transgender Participation in Women’s Sports

Portland, Ore. (AP) — Sophie Cunningham expressed no concern over the protests against transgender participation in women’s sports linked to the Indiana Fever’s recent games. Cunningham spoke before the Fever’s game against the Portland Fire, alongside rallies supporting her stance.

Outside the venue, supporters gathered for the second consecutive game to endorse Cunningham’s views on transgender athletes. “At the end of the day, I come in and do my job,” Cunningham said. “Everyone who knows me knows I’m full of love. I’m bubbly, I love the people around me, basketball, and inspiring the next generation positively.” She emphasized that her focus remains on basketball and staying true to herself despite differing opinions.

Earlier in the week, a similar rally preceded the Fever’s game at the Seattle Storm. Both rallies drew only about two dozen participants. Cunningham remarked, “I’ve had nothing to do with them. It’s people practicing their rights to freedom of speech, a longstanding tradition in the WNBA,” applauding supporters for their courage.

Another rally was scheduled for Sunday in Minneapolis when the Fever play the Minnesota Lynx. At Seattle’s Climate Change Arena, two Cunningham supporters held signs court-side. Celeste Keaton, a Storm co-owner, faced a five-game suspension and unspecified fine for an altercation with these supporters. The Storm’s apology stated their commitment to a “welcoming and respectful environment” during games.

The Seattle rally advocated for a statewide initiative, IL26-638, aiming to prevent transgender students from joining girls’ sports at Washington schools. Amy Souza, present at the Portland rally, praised Cunningham for protecting women’s sports. “I’m here to support Sophie Cunningham, who bravely defended women’s sports and locker rooms,” Souza said, also standing against harassment faced by teen girl supporters.

Cunningham was booed by the Moda Center crowd upon entering the game, where attendees waved small transgender flags. The Fever secured a 112-98 win over the Fire, marking their fifth consecutive victory. Cunningham scored 13 points, while Caitlin Clark achieved a triple-double with 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists.

Coach Stephanie White acknowledged the controversy’s impact on the team, saying, “We’re frustrated as our focus should be on basketball and team growth. Yet, this is part of our growth as a league, requiring management and leading through discussion.”
