The Tragic Death of Sylvie Cachay and the Conviction of Nicholas Brooks

On December 9, 2010, Sylvie Cachay was found dead in an overflowing bathtub at the Soho House in New York City. A water leak revealed a timeline crucial to unraveling her death. Sylvie was an aspiring fashion designer who relocated to New York with dreams of success. In 2006, she introduced a swimwear line called Syla, gaining recognition in the industry.

In the summer of 2010, Sylvie met Nicholas Brooks. Their relationship began soon after. Nick, 24 at the time, had left college and struggled with employment. Raised in a privileged New York background, he was the son of Oscar-winning composer Joseph Brooks, known for “You Light Up My Life.” In 2009, Joseph Brooks was arrested on over 100 sexual misconduct charges.

Although Sylvie and Nick were at different life stages, they connected after an incident on their first date when Sylvie’s dog was hit by a car. Despite this bond, their relationship lasted only six months and was marked by multiple breakups and reconciliations.

The day before Sylvie’s death, a clash occurred. Sylvie’s brother noted her suspicion of Nick after noticing excessive bank withdrawals. Sylvie emailed Nick, accusing him of theft and threatening police involvement.

Despite tensions, they met at Sylvie’s apartment on December 8. Nick claimed a fire broke out during his shower, engulfing Sylvie’s bed. After putting out the fire, they decided to stay at a hotel. They checked into Soho House, where Sylvie was a member. Footage captured their arrival at 12:31 a.m.

Nick stated that Sylvia needed check-in assistance due to medication. After being helped to bed by an employee, Sylvie intended to sleep. A busboy delivered ice to the room at 12:45 a.m., accompanied by Nick.

Security cameras showed Nick entering and exiting the room numerous times. At 2:11 a.m., a water leak complaint arose from the room below. Nick exited Room 20 for the final time at 2:18 a.m., meeting a member in the lobby before leaving for drinks.

At 2:51 a.m., following a second complaint, hotel staff entered the room to find Sylvie submerged in an overflowing bathtub, declared dead by 3:33 a.m.

Nick returned to a crime scene at 5:30 a.m. on December 9 and was arrested. On July 11, 2013, a jury convicted Nick Brooks of second-degree murder. He received a sentence of 25 years to life for his role in Sylvie Cachay’s tragic death.
