Strategic Messaging in Democratic Campaigns

On the campaign trail, Democratic candidates have consistently targeted Republicans on issues like high costs and economic pressures faced by working individuals. Keeping with the theme of affordability, many in the party believe this approach is crucial for Democrats to reclaim power in Congress. Others within the party, however, suggest diversifying the message by also addressing the topic of democracy, especially in light of former President Trump’s baseless criticisms of the country’s election system.

Democrats must demonstrate commitment on all fronts, ensuring that their message is genuine and relatable, stated Jane Kleeb, vice chair of the Democratic National Committee, in a conversation with NPR.

Kleeb emphasized the importance of discussing election integrity, particularly after Trump accused Democrats of cheating without evidence during his recent presidential speech. Despite this, a new report by two California researchers suggests focusing solely on democracy may not resonate with working-class voters.

Activists and party operatives express concerns that emphasizing democracy issues might detract voters from pressing concerns such as housing, food prices, fuel, and healthcare costs.

It is imperative for Democrats to remain focused on Trump’s mishandling of economic matters, stated Lindsay Owens, president and CEO of Groundwork Action in an NPR interview.

Owens believes Democrats currently hold a favorable position regarding economic issues in the midterms. Recent polls indicate a shift in trust towards Democrats over Republicans on economic matters.

Owens points out, The Republicans’ decline on economic issues is self-inflicted. Trump’s and Republicans’ policies have worsened inflation and raised costs for American families.

Owens encourages Democrats to effectively leverage and reinforce their advantage on cost of living concerns, as these are predominant in voters’ minds during elections.

Amanda Litman, co-founder and president of Run for Something, shares similar sentiments. She argues that Democrats can address topics like gerrymandering, campaign finance, and voting rights once elected.

It’s challenging to convince voters that eliminating gerrymandering will make housing affordable, Litman commented.

Kleeb holds a contrasting view, asserting that focusing solely on one issue overlooks the multifaceted nature of voter concerns. She remarked that in 2024, Democratic strategists dismissed democracy as a losing issue, yet it proved to be fundamentally motivating.

Nathan Johnson, Democratic candidate for Texas attorney general, notes the difficulty Democrats face discussing democracy due to its broad nature. He contends that voter suppression is real but hasn’t captured widespread public attention.

Johnson suggests intertwining democratic principles with economic discussions. Malcolm Kenyatta, a Pennsylvania state representative running for reelection, employs this strategy, highlighting corruption frustrations among voters, arguing these are linked with the cost-of-living crisis as part of the Republican agenda.

Litman acknowledges such messaging can work, urging awareness of voters’ engagement levels with democratic institutions. She notes young people are skeptical about democracy’s benefits for them.

Melissa Toufanian, managing director of polling firm Navigator Research, discusses mixed reactions to electoral issue messaging. Her survey of low-propensity Democratic voters revealed varied motivations across demographics regarding election-related topics.

While some voters feel invigorated to vote when hearing about electioneering threats, adverse effects exist. Toufanian notes voter suppression discussions demotivated younger Black voters and older Hispanic voters within the sample.
