Sanders Criticizes Fetterman Over Disconnection with Voters

Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., expressed criticism towards Senator John Fetterman, D-Pa., labeling him as ‘way out of touch’ with American voters. This came after Fetterman accused Sanders of showing a lack of remorse for endorsing former Maine Senate nominee Graham Platner, who faced multiple scandals.

During an appearance on ‘Meet the Press,’ Sanders responded to Fetterman’s comments by discussing Fetterman’s standing with Pennsylvania Democrats. He argued that Fetterman is disconnected from voter concerns, particularly on issues like Israel. Referring to a July Quinnipiac University survey, Sanders pointed out that Fetterman had the approval of only 19% of Democrats in Pennsylvania, a figure he described as likely lower than any other Democratic senator. Despite Fetterman’s lower support among Democrats, the same survey noted that 77% of Republicans in the state approved of him, with an overall approval rating among registered voters at 48%.

When asked to comment on Sanders’ critique, Fetterman referred to his previous remarks to Semafor. He had criticized Sanders for his association with Platner, who had withdrawn from the Senate race following serious allegations. Fetterman accused Sanders of irresponsibly promoting Platner amid these controversies.

Fetterman stated, ‘You were the carnival barker for an accused rapist. You should have taken my advice, since you and P-Hustle blew up the Maine race.’ He called for Sanders to take responsibility and apologize for supporting Platner.

The conflict between the senators reflects ongoing tensions regarding Platner and differences within the Democratic Party on issues like Israel. Host Kristen Welker highlighted these points on ‘Meet the Press,’ playing a segment where Fetterman accused Sanders of elevating Platner’s image despite the controversies.

Fetterman questioned why people were not more outraged about Sanders’ endorsement of Platner, whom Fetterman described in highly critical terms, citing allegations of past violent behavior.

Sanders, in turn, referenced Fetterman’s diminished standing among Democrats in Pennsylvania, using it to bolster his argument about Fetterman’s disconnect with voters.

Eventually, Sanders did call for Platner to exit the race after allegations emerged from a former girlfriend accusing Platner of rape, which he denied. Welker questioned Sanders on his decision to endorse Platner before the allegations became public. Sanders defended the campaign, while also acknowledging the seriousness of the accusation, which led to Platner’s withdrawal.
