Chicago White Sox seize victory against Tampa Bay Rays with early lead

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Chicago White Sox capitalized on early errors by the Tampa Bay Rays, securing a decisive 9-1 victory on Sunday at Tropicana Field. In front of 23,559 fans, left fielder Sam Antonacci’s grounder to second base led to a missed fielding by Ryan Vilade, allowing Antonacci to reach base. A series of errors in the first inning set the stage for Sox to score twice, gaining an early advantage.

The American League Central-leading White Sox (59-52) won two out of three games in their series against the AL East-leading Rays. The victory maintained their three-game lead in the division over the Cleveland Guardians (57-56), who also triumphed over the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-0 the same day.

It’s always great to win these types of games, said infielder Miguel Vargas, emphasizing the significance of the win.

During the first inning, Antonacci advanced to third on a two-out double by Colson Montgomery. Andrew Benintendi followed with a grounder to the mound, which Rays pitcher Griffin Jax bobbled, reaching first and allowing Antonacci to score. Continuing on, Benintendi advanced on a wild pitch from Jax as Montgomery headed for home, giving the Sox a 2-0 lead.

Sox manager Will Venable commented, To get two runs early is obviously a nice way to start the game. He praised his team’s competitiveness and ability to exploit opportunities, highlighting the Rays’ rare defensive lapses.

In the fourth inning, Benintendi hit a solo home run. Everson Pereira significantly bolstered the offense, driving in two runs with a double in the sixth and hitting a two-run homer in the ninth against reliever Alex Cook.

Pereira, not initially in the lineup, stepped up following a scratch from right fielder Braden Montgomery due to a superficial skin infection. This change allowed Pereira, despite injuries and setbacks earlier in the season, to make a strong contribution.

Through an interpreter, Pereira stated, It hasn’t been an easy year. But you know what, there’s nothing I can do about it. Now I focus on what I can do.

Vargas also added a two-run homer in the ninth against Chris Roycroft, contributing to the Sox’s commanding position.

Starting pitcher Anthony Kay delivered a stellar performance, distributing seven hits over a career-high 6 1/3 innings. He struck out three and walked one, improving his record to 8-5.

It was good to go out there and get some length, Kay mentioned, reflecting on his efforts to maintain strong innings.

The series victory over the Rays (65-46), who hold the best record in the AL, demonstrated the Sox’s current form against top teams. Limiting the Rays to only three runs in the series underscored their effective strategy.

Any time you can win a series, it’s really good, Kay noted, highlighting Sox’s series splits against notable teams, including the Yankees.

Heading to Boston for a three-game series starting Tuesday, the Sox expressed enthusiasm about their recent play. With the addition of pitcher Luis Castillo from Seattle Mariners, the team looks forward to robust future performances.
