A 38-year-old man lost his life on Saturday after a shark attack off the coast of Australia. The incident occurred at Horseshoe Reef near Rottnest Island, located about 19 miles west of Perth. The attack happened just before 10 a.m., as authorities reported.
The man, who was in the water at the time, was bitten by a shark. After being brought to shore, he never regained consciousness. A St. John WA Ambulance spokesperson stated, “A 38-year-old man was in the water at Horseshoe Reef when he was believed to have been bitten by a shark.” Despite efforts by paramedics, the man could not be revived.
The great white shark involved in the attack highlights the region’s natural hazards. Rottnest Island remains a popular tourist destination.
This incident marks the second fatal shark attack in Australia this year. Perth’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development urged the public to exercise “additional caution” in the area, as noted by BBC News.
In a tragic case earlier this year, a 12-year-old boy succumbed to a shark attack in Sydney Harbor just a week after being bitten. Three other non-fatal shark attacks were reported along the New South Wales coast around the same time.
Authorities advise swimmers and divers to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines when in the ocean.
