Key Republican Senators Drop Opposition to Trump’s DOJ Pick
Two prominent Republican senators, John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina, have decided to end their opposition to President Donald Trump’s nominee for the Justice Department lead, Todd Blanche. Previously, they had resisted his confirmation, seeking guarantees from the administration in return.
On Sunday, both senators received the concessions they were negotiating for as the confirmation process for Blanche approached a critical stage. Their initial resistance almost led to the withdrawal of Blanche’s nomination, but now they stand ready to support him as the successor to former Attorney General Pam Bondi.
“We want to express our gratitude to Mr. Blanche and his staff for working with us on this, and we look forward to voting to advance his nomination out of the Senate Judiciary Committee soon,” Cornyn and Tillis said in a joint statement.
The senators’ main concerns included ensuring that the nearly $2 billion anti-weaponization fund would not be reinstated and that Trump’s audit immunity would remain limited to him and specific defendants in his IRS lawsuit. Blanche announced the permanent elimination of the fund and restricted audit protection to Trump and his family.
The Department of Justice formalized these decisions, addressing concerns shared by other Republican colleagues. As crucial votes in advancing Blanche’s nomination from committee to the Senate floor, Cornyn and Tillis’s support is vital. Any defection could result in Blanche’s nomination stalling indefinitely.
Trump previously warned he might revoke Blanche’s nomination if the senators didn’t change their stance. Over the weekend, he intensified this pressure, threatening to revive the anti-weaponization fund and lobbying Congress to formalize it. Trump announced on Truth Social his intention to keep Blanche as Acting AG if confirmation falters.
Senator Tillis commented, “It’s unfortunate that Todd Blanche, who I consider qualified for the job, will not be confirmed because of this reversal. Hopefully, we can resolve this by Tuesday.”
With the key issues seemingly addressed, the Senate Judiciary Committee has rescheduled a vote for Blanche. Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley aims to confirm Blanche before the August recess, highlighting his strong record in law enforcement and public safety.
