Major Disruptions for American Travelers to Cuba Amid Blackout Crisis

American travelers visiting Cuba may face significant challenges due to severe power outages across the country. This situation results from a total collapse of Cuba’s electrical grid, as stated by the U.S. Embassy in Havana.

Embassy Advisories: The embassy has issued a warning, urging all U.S. citizens currently in Cuba or planning to travel to the country to prepare accordingly. The power failure contributes to a series of blackouts affecting residents and travelers alike.

Recurring Grid Failures: Officials have reported six national grid failures in 2026, with three occurring just in July. Residents are experiencing extreme heat without air conditioning, leading many to sleep outside near water sources.

Temperatures have reached 93 degrees Fahrenheit, feeling like 106 degrees due to 80% humidity.

Visitor Advisory: While Cuba is not a primary tourist destination, it does attract visitors worldwide, including those from the U.S. However, U.S. law restricts travel to Cuba for tourism. According to the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, Americans may visit Cuba for specified reasons such as family visits, journalism, educational events, religious activities, humanitarian efforts, and supporting the Cuban people.

To aid travelers during their stay, a previous advisory from May 2025 recommended vigilance about personal surroundings and discouraged resistance in the event of a robbery. Displaying wealth is not advised.

Preparedness Tips: Travelers should be prepared for prolonged power outages. Bringing portable battery banks, spare batteries, nonperishable food, and water is advised.

Energy Crisis Blame: Cuba has long struggled with an outdated electrical infrastructure and recurrent fuel shortages. While Cuban officials have pointed to U.S. sanctions as a contributing factor, the exact cause of the latest collapse remains unknown.
