Clay Holmes Rejoins Cubs Rotation

Clay Holmes is set to return to Major League Baseball action. One of the Cubs’ two mid-season additions to the pitching rotation, he has completed his rehab assignments and will come off the 60-day injured list for this weekend’s series in Kansas City. Manager Craig Counsell confirmed that Holmes expressed a strong desire to pitch for the Cubs instead of continuing with a fourth rehab start. Holmes, out since mid-May due to a right fibula fracture, built up to 73 pitches in his latest rehab outing.

Right-hander Kevin Gausman won’t make his debut against Toronto, his former team, but will instead pitch during the Royals series. The rotation is likely to feature Gausman on Friday and Holmes on Saturday, pending any changes.

“Looking at this team and their defense, it’s one of the best places I could be,” Holmes remarked. “I’m a sinker ball pitcher. Relying on quality contact and knowing I have strong defense behind me is very encouraging.”

Holmes has past success as a reliever, amassing 74 saves with a 2.85 ERA for the Yankees over several previous seasons. This experience provides the Cubs with additional flexibility. Counsell suggested that while a six-man rotation isn’t a regular option, the team may consider it based on circumstances.

Holmes is open to any role that could help the team in the postseason. “In the playoffs, it’s not about one person or role,” he said. “It’s about contributing to victories, whether as a starter or reliever. I’m eager to be part of essential moments when required.”

Tyrone Taylor’s Role Against Left-Handed Pitching

Outfielder Tyrone Taylor is getting opportunities to play in left field against left-handed pitchers. Ian Happ’s struggles against left-handers, hitting .158 with a .232 on-base percentage, has led to more strategic decisions. In comparison, Taylor has excelled with a .301/.311/.589 slash line against southpaws this season.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell aims to utilize Taylor’s strengths. Taylor is enthusiastic about joining the Cubs. “The energy here is fantastic, and I’ve been welcomed warmly,” Taylor said before Tuesday’s game.

Though Happ is experiencing challenges with left-handed pitching, Counsell mentioned that adjustments would be made as necessary. “Ian will still face some left-handers, but Taylor offers strong performance against them, so we’ll manage it accordingly,” Counsell explained.

Kevin Alcántara Returns to Triple-A

Outfielder Kevin Alcántara was sent back to Triple-A Iowa shortly after he hit his first major-league home run. Alcántara’s call-up was initially intended to be brief, coinciding with Taylor’s addition to the roster. Despite his strong performance, roster management dictated his return to the minor leagues.

Counsell expressed that the move wasn’t easy but necessary. “Kevin understands the situation. He handled the opportunity well and made the most of it. It’s satisfying, and he knows he will have more chances in the future,” he stated.
