Trump’s Influence Evident in Michigan GOP Gubernatorial Primary

President Donald Trump’s influence in Republican primaries was evident in Michigan during a key GOP gubernatorial nomination. Rep. John James, twice a U.S. Senate nominee in Michigan, won the GOP primary against businessman Perry Johnson. James, endorsed by Trump, succeeded in the Great Lakes battleground state, according to the Associated Press.

James, a West Point graduate and Army Ranger, served as an Apache helicopter pilot in Iraq. Now, he will face two-term Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, a Democrat, in the general election. The election aims to find a successor for current Governor Gretchen Whitmer who is term-limited.

The primary between James and Johnson became contentious. Johnson, a former gubernatorial and presidential candidate, remarked on James’ race in the campaign, calling him a “DEI candidate.” James, one of the few Black Republicans in Congress, said Johnson’s comments were desperate. Despite having spent millions of his own money, Johnson outspent James in the race.

James remarked before the primary, “Nobody outworks a ranger,” and emphasized that leadership and resonance with voters matter more than money.

The GOP race initially included several candidates like former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox and state Senate Republican leader Aric Nesbitt. Both suspended their campaigns, though their names stayed on the ballot.

Trump recently supported James at a rally in Michigan, reinforcing his endorsement. Trump’s influence has been strong in GOP primaries across states like Indiana, Kentucky, and Texas. However, he faced setbacks, such as when his endorsement didn’t secure a win for Rep. Randy Feenstra in Iowa.

In other states, Trump-backed candidates maintained a stronghold. Anthony Constantino defeated Robert Smullen in New York, while in South Carolina, Trump backed both candidates in a runoff, ensuring his presence. In Louisiana, Sen. Bill Cassidy lost renomination, as Trump-backed Rep. Julia Letlow succeeded. Additionally, Rep. Andy Biggs won Arizona’s primary with Trump’s support.
