Rep. Shri Thanedar Loses to Donavan McKinney in Michigan Primary

Rep. Shri Thanedar has been defeated in the Democratic primary in Michigan by state Rep. Donavan McKinney, according to projections by NBC News. McKinney’s win marks a triumph for the party’s progressive faction. The 34-year-old state legislator gained support from several significant progressive figures both statewide and nationally.

McKinney, a democrat and self-identified democratic socialist, endorses a progressive agenda. His platform advocates for policies like “Medicare for All” and placing restrictions on military aid to Israel. McKinney also seeks substantial investments in clean energy and housing sectors.

Though Thanedar narrowly secured his seat in 2022 through self-funding, he encountered various challenges. Initially, he campaigned as a progressive. However, he distanced himself from the Democratic Socialists of America in 2023. Local chapters claim he was expelled, though he insists he left voluntarily. Since then, Thanedar has shifted to emphasize support for Israel.

Criticism has followed Thanedar for his attempts to impeach Trump without party leadership approval. Despite this, he received endorsements from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other top House Democrats. Concerns have also been raised about his campaign’s financial activities. His campaign reported losing over $2 million due to cryptocurrency investments, an unusual choice for campaign funds. Additionally, Thanedar used taxpayer money to fund TV ads resembling campaign ads.

McKinney announced his congressional run last year, well ahead of the primary. He highlights his upbringing in poverty and being the first in his family to attend college. McKinney emphasizes his legislative experience as proof of his readiness to make an impact.

Thanedar’s challenges were compounded by broader frustrations within Democratic voters towards the establishment and a coordinated progressive campaign in Michigan. McKinney had the endorsement of Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, and notable progressives such as Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Rashida Tlaib.
