Construction of a new helipad at the White House resumed as crews dismantled a granite seal, intended as a landing spot for Marine One. This is part of changes requested by President Trump. Workers removed the seal using jackhammers, though the reason remains unclear. The Associated Press reported the development.
Construction on the helipad began after the removal of a fighting arena from the South Lawn. This arena had been used for the ‘Freedom 250 UFC’ event celebrating Trump’s 80th birthday in June. The helipad is designed to accommodate the VH-92A Patriot helicopter, aiming to protect the South Lawn from potential damage.
The idea for the new helipad surfaced in May when discussions indicated it would prevent harm to the South Lawn. The helipad is a permanent structure for the White House. President Trump stated that Sikorsky Aircraft, which manufactures the VH-92A helicopters and is part of Lockheed Martin, is covering the project’s $6 million cost. According to Trump, this decision stemmed from the company’s sense of responsibility due to the helicopter’s powerful nature.
White House spokesperson Davis Ingle emphasized the necessity of the helipad for the president’s safety and the preservation of the South Lawn. A granite floor with a presidential seal marked the early completion stage as July ended. Reports suggested Trump was dissatisfied with its design, prompting construction alterations.
Sources noted Trump’s desire for a level landing pad, requiring adjustments to the sloped South Lawn. The extent of additional costs for these changes remains unknown. This helipad is one among several projects initiated by Trump during his second term, including a new ballroom after demolishing the East Wing.
Further modifications under Trump include a gold-decorated Oval Office, a paved Rose Garden, and the addition of a ‘Presidential Walk of Fame.’
