Kansas Basketball Coach Brett Ballard Hospitalized After Crash
Popular Kansas college basketball coach Brett Ballard is recovering in a hospital after sustaining serious injuries in a highway accident. Ballard, who also once played for the Kansas Jayhawks, was involved in the crash on Tuesday evening.
Brett Ballard, 46, coaches Washburn University and was driving his 2024 Ford F-150 when the incident occurred. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that Ballard was westbound on Interstate 470 in Topeka at approximately 8:15 p.m. when his vehicle veered off the left side of the road.
The truck hit a delineator post, moved into a steep embankment, and collided with a concrete bridge pillar. As a result, the vehicle sustained significant damage. Ballard, who was alone in the vehicle and wearing a seatbelt, was transported to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka for medical attention.
Washburn President JuliAnn Mazachek issued a statement urging the community to support Ballard and his family. “We are deeply saddened to share that Coach Brett Ballard was seriously injured in a car accident last evening,” she stated. “Our hearts are with Coach Ballard, his family, the men’s basketball program, and all affected during this difficult time.”
Brett Ballard is a well-known figure in Kansas basketball. He played as a guard for the Kansas Jayhawks from 2000 to 2002 under coach Roy Williams. He later served as an assistant coach on Bill Self’s staff for seven seasons.
Leading the Washburn Ichabods for nine seasons, Ballard has created a strong Division II program with a 198-81 overall record. Under his guidance, the team has frequently appeared in the NCAA Tournament and become a formidable contender in the MIAA. Before Washburn, he coached at Baker University, earning a conference championship and an NAIA tournament appearance.
Ballard’s positive reputation extends throughout Kansas’s basketball community. News of the accident has prompted supporters statewide and beyond to send messages of encouragement, hoping for his recovery.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, with no further details disclosed by authorities.
