Red Sox Search for Shortstop Leaves Trevor Story Relieved

The Boston Red Sox openly searched for a new shortstop at the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline. Trevor Story, one of the team’s highest-paid players, observed their efforts to find upgrades at his position. He acknowledged feeling relief when the search did not yield results, thus preserving his chance to return to the field in that role.

“There was speculation, for sure. I saw it,” Story commented on Wednesday, according to Chris Cotillo from MassLive. “But that’s the business side of the game. I can’t control that, especially when I’m not playing. It unfolded as it did. Obviously, I’m happy and excited to return and contribute to this incredible turnaround.”

The Red Sox were in discussions with the Miami Marlins for Otto Lopez, the Washington Nationals for CJ Abrams, and the Cincinnati Reds for Elly De La Cruz. Despite these efforts, they shifted their focus to acquiring now-former Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman instead.

This search highlights the gap at shortstop due to Story’s long-term absence following sports hernia surgery. The team relied on Andruw Monasterio, Nick Sogard, and Tsung Che-Cheng in his stead. Story is expected to reclaim his role as the everyday shortstop because of his leadership, defense, and offensive capabilities.

His return might happen soon, as he prepares for a rehab assignment. “We’re reassessing at the end of the week, evaluating how everything went, and looking ahead,” Story mentioned. “I’m nearing top speed, and now it’s about how my body responds.”

The Red Sox will benefit from his return, yet they require Story to perform as he did in 2025, not in prior years. He must prove his worth to secure his place on the team.
