Coco Gauff Criticizes WTA’s Gene-Testing Policy Amid Transgender Community Debate

Coco Gauff, a prominent tennis player and two-time Grand Slam champion, has voiced her concerns regarding the WTA Tour’s newly introduced gene-testing policy. Gauff is critical of the way the discussion around this policy has become politicized, leading to what she describes as “animosity towards the trans community.”

Speaking at a press conference at the Canadian Open in Toronto after defeating Kayla Day, Gauff emphasized the need for a nuanced discussion on the topic. She acknowledged the importance of maintaining fairness in women’s sports while opposing the negative attention directed at transgender individuals. “People who don’t really care, but just want to use this as a reason to attack the trans community,” Gauff stated, “so I’m not really a big fan of that either.”

The WTA introduced mandatory gene-testing as a prerequisite for all players who wish to compete in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This testing targets the SRY gene, which is typically associated with the Y chromosome and related to male sex development.

However, the presence of transgender women at the Olympic level remains uncertain, both within the WTA Tour and broader international competition. The WTA asserts that its policy distinguishes between biological sex and gender identity without questioning or disrespecting an individual’s gender identity.

Still, the mandatory gender screening has drawn criticism from human rights groups and activists. Gauff highlighted that many players were caught off guard by this policy, learning of it only through official announcements. She called for more transparency in how such policies are introduced.

Governing bodies from various sports, including track and field, skiing, and boxing, have already implemented similar screenings, adding to the controversial debate over gender and athletics.
