Harrison Butker Adjusts Strategy After Super Bowl Success

Following a Super Bowl win, the Kansas City Chiefs secured kicker Harrison Butker with a four-year contract extension worth $25.6 million during their 2024 training camp. In the 2023 season, Butker achieved a career-high field goal percentage of 94.3%. His postseason performance was flawless, successfully completing all 11 field goal attempts and eight extra point attempts, contributing significantly to the Chiefs’ third Super Bowl triumph.

The 2024 season introduced new kickoff rules, prompting kickers to adapt their techniques. While Butker experimented with different kickoff methods in the 2024 and 2025 seasons, his field goal accuracy declined. He made 84% of attempts in 2024 and slightly improved to 84.2% in 2025.

Butker admitted that experimenting with kickoffs impacted his field goal accuracy. He now aims to align his kickoff technique with his field goal style to boost his success rate. According to a transcription from Pro Football Talk, he remarked, Field goals matter the most. Trying to hit those knuckleballs and funny kickoffs maybe affected the field goals a little bit. Butker adopted a high hang time strategy for kickoffs midway through the previous season, focusing on location instead of low line-drive kicks. This alteration helped him improve his performance and he’s committed to maintaining this approach during training camp and the regular season.

Currently, Butker ranks as the fourth-highest paid kicker in the NFL. He holds the record for the longest Super Bowl field goal, a 57-yard attempt achieved in Super Bowl LVIII. As the regular season approaches, Butker’s confidence is renewed, and he anticipates returning to peak form, evidenced by his nine-year career average of 88.3% on field goals.
