Kansas City Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy Faces Family Crisis Amidst Team Duties

Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, Eric Bieniemy, faces a family crisis following a tragic incident involving his son, Elijah. On July 26, Elijah allegedly shot his mother, Mia, multiple times, resulting in her hospitalization. Despite this, Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach stated that Bieniemy remains connected with the team, although his family takes precedence.

To ensure Bieniemy stays informed, the Chiefs set up a live feed of practices, allowing him to observe and analyze player drills remotely, The Athletic reports. During one such session, Bieniemy called Veach, expressing a desire to communicate with head coach Andy Reid. Reid had brought Bieniemy back as offensive coordinator earlier this year.

“It’s so refreshing to have back that attention to detail,” Veach remarked about Bieniemy’s influence, who insisted on players knowing their assignments and maintaining no ‘safe space’.

Bieniemy’s son, Elijah, has been granted a mental health competency evaluation before his preliminary court hearing. This follows charges of malicious wounding and related firearm offenses, per the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.

The Chiefs hope Bieniemy’s experience, including two Super Bowl victories with the team, will guide them back to success after a challenging previous season with a 6-11 record. Veach added that Bieniemy’s presence serves as a motivational force for the roster.

Elijah reportedly made a call to law enforcement two days prior to the alleged shooting, indicating his perceived inability to access personal weapons, which he claimed were being withheld by his parents. Court documents cite Elijah’s mental health struggles and current inability to contribute to his legal defense.

Bieniemy, prior to his return to the Chiefs, worked with teams such as the Washington Commanders and Chicago Bears. While he focuses on personal issues, Bieniemy continues to support the Chiefs during this crucial training period.
