Kevin Gausman’s Mission with Chicago Cubs: Aiming for World Series

Kevin Gausman continues his quest for World Series glory with the Chicago Cubs, building on his 14-season career. Last year, despite reaching the World Series with the Toronto Blue Jays and starting in Game 6, Gausman faced disappointment when the team lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Blue Jays couldn’t secure a 3-2 series lead, falling in Game 7 during extra innings.

The Cubs’ decision to sign Gausman reflects their confidence in both the team’s current roster and Gausman’s seasoned postseason experience. Gausman’s primary objective remains singular: to return to the World Series, and this time, as a Cub. “It’s an addictive feeling once you get there,” Gausman expressed. “Losing was painful, but playing in the World Series is something every player dreams of. It’s an unforgettable experience. Once you’ve been there, you want to return, so I’m eager to aim for it with the Cubs.”

The Cubs face a challenge in managing a rich rotation, considering they recently dealt with a shortage of pitchers. Gausman will debut for the Cubs against the Kansas City Royals, aiming to improve from his previous performances. Since a particularly rough outing against the Cubs on June 19, Gausman holds a 6.47 ERA, walking 20 batters over 40 1/3 innings.

“I need to be a reliable innings eater, which is why they brought me here—to consistently start games and go deep into them,” Gausman remarked. Cubs’ President of Baseball Operations, Jed Hoyer, has targeted Gausman since his career began in Baltimore. Hoyer described landing Gausman as capturing their “white whale” after securing the trade.

Gausman is enthusiastic about utilizing the Cubs’ strong defense during his upcoming performance at Kauffman Stadium. “With a solid defense, you can approach the game aggressively. Usually, that confidence alters outcomes in your favor,” Gausman noted.

Dansby Swanson, a former Atlanta Braves teammate of Gausman, praised his resilience. “Gausman never lets the game overwhelm him. He has a distinctive delivery with great extension and carry, challenging hitters and forcing difficult decisions,” Swanson shared. “His journey from being a high draft pick to overcoming challenges and excelling, speaks volumes of his character. It’s inspiring to have teammates who triumph over adversity.”

The Cubs have yet to see a pitcher reach the eighth inning this season. The addition of Gausman aims to reduce the bullpen’s workload, particularly during injury-driven strains. With Gausman’s trade, he reunited briefly with his former Blue Jays teammates at Wrigley Field. Initially, he expected to face the Cubs as a Blue Jay, as highlighted by an earlier disappointing game against them.
