Challenges Mount for Attorney General Nominee Todd Blanche

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche faces significant hurdles in his confirmation process. Recently, Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, announced her decision to oppose Blanche’s nomination as the nation’s top prosecutor and law enforcement official. This decision adds to the existing challenges in his bid for confirmation.

Senate Republican leadership now finds itself in a difficult position. With Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., still absent from the Senate, any further loss of votes could jeopardize Blanche’s confirmation. Despite robust lobbying efforts and Blanche’s personal visit to Alaska, Murkowski remains unconvinced.

“The politicization — even weaponization — of the Department did not start with this administration but has accelerated during it,” Murkowski said in a statement. She cited issues such as the handling of the Epstein files and immunity protections granted to President Trump and his associates.

Murkowski expressed concern about a nearly $2 billion anti-weaponization fund linked to Trump. She noted the fund’s potential implications and criticized the Department of Justice’s approach, suggesting it had the potential to reward protestors from January 6.

The DOJ had agreed to permanently rescind the fund upon request from Sens. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., and John Cornyn, R-Texas. However, Murkowski fears Trump could revive it, given his support for the fund’s return.

Before Murkowski’s decision, President Trump made critical remarks about her in an interview. He emphasized his contributions to Alaska, stating that no president has done more for the state than he has.

As the Senate prepares for a possible vote on Blanche, another Republican, Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., remains undecided. His decision could tip the balance, especially with McConnell’s absence. If the vote ends in a 50-50 tie, Vice President JD Vance would need to cast the deciding vote.

Currently, only Murkowski and Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, have publicly opposed Blanche’s confirmation. Murkowski concluded by expressing her desire for an Attorney General capable of curbing the administration’s excesses. “I hope Mr. Blanche is able to achieve that, if confirmed, but I simply do not have confidence that will be the case,” she stated.
