The Evolution of Role Model: From Viral Hits to Timeless Music
Tucker Pillsbury, known by his stage name Role Model, rose to fame with his hit song “Sally, When the Wine Runs Out.” This song not only went viral but also shaped his music career. Pillsbury enjoyed the attention it brought, but he longed to advance musically beyond “Sally.”
His journey so far can be summarized by one pressing question, “Where’s my Sally tonight?” During live shows, he’d invite special guests to sing the song’s bridge. The initial “Sally” participants came from the crowd, eventually transitioning to celebrities like Charli XCX and Natalie Portman. This approach helped his song gain traction, creating a viral country tune about a fleeting romance.
Pillsbury’s musical exploration inspired “Chuck Timely & The Hourglass”—his third album—and he vowed to avoid synthetic elements. Focused on emulating the emotions found in ’80s synth-pop, he drew heavily from artists like Madonna, infusing his music with unique, raw elements.
Reflecting on life changes, Pillsbury noticed friends marrying and moving away. Feeling stagnant, he encapsulated these themes in his character, Chuck. He also created a vision board filled with iconic images to bring Chuck’s persona to life. These inspirations translated into music that captured lonelier, more reflective moments.
Originally from Maine, Pillsbury attended film school in Pittsburgh. There, he became more involved in music, eventually releasing his debut EP in 2017. His path shifted dramatically when Mac Miller’s manager contacted him. Though their collaboration was never published, this opportunity set Pillsbury on a new trajectory.
His second album, “Kansas Anymore,” featured a shift from alt-pop to rock and folk. This transition defined his lyrical voice, capturing personal experiences like the end of his relationship with Emma Chamberlain. A deluxe version included “Sally,” turning it into his biggest single.
Despite the success, Pillsbury knew he had grown. With “Chuck Timely & The Hourglass,” he refined his sound further. Each track features rich arrangements and narratives, distinct from typical country music trends. Notable tracks like “Stain” highlight his vocal talent, while “Chasing Midnights” features unconventional instrument choices, maintaining a distinct style.
