Chicago White Sox Face Catcher Injuries and Roster Changes
The Chicago White Sox are dealing with injuries to their catchers once more. Recently acquired catcher Joey Bart has been placed on the 10-day injured list because of a fracture in his left hand. General manager Chris Getz mentioned Bart will be sidelined for over a month. In response, the Sox have recalled Edgar Quero from Triple-A Charlotte to add depth in the catching position.
These were among four roster changes announced before the series opener against the Cleveland Guardians at Rate Field. Additionally, the Sox placed pitcher Chris Murphy on the 15-day IL with a left flexor strain and called up right-hander David Sandlin from Charlotte. Bart’s injury occurred after he was hit by a pitch during the seventh inning of a 12-11 loss to the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
“Really disappointing,” said manager Will Venable about Bart’s injury. “It’s upsetting to have him out after acquiring him. He was excited to contribute in meaningful games. We’re eager to get him back and see what he can do.”
Bart’s injury came just three games into his stint with the White Sox, having joined from the Atlanta Braves. Getz noted the team would miss Bart’s presence. “Unfortunately, losing Joey is quite a setback. However, we need to find solutions. Edgar Quero is back to fill in, and we’ll navigate this challenge,” he said. The general manager emphasized that the catcher position is often in flux due to frequent injuries.
One such injury has limited Kyle Teel to just 19 games. He is currently on the injured list as well. In July, catcher Edgar Quero secured a victory for the Sox with a walk-off RBI single against the Yankees.
“It’s been a challenging season,” Getz admitted, “starting with losing Kyle to a hamstring strain during spring training. We rely on different players to step up, and there are multiple ways catchers can add value beyond batting.”
Quero, recently returned from Charlotte, has previously been optioned back twice this season. Although his performance initially struggled, he remains optimistic about his current form.
“The season’s start was tough for me,” Quero said. “Lately, I’ve felt better and more prepared. Maintaining mental strength and confidence is vital.”
This marks his third time with the team this season. Sox manager Venable spoke about utilizing Quero and Drew Romo by evaluating matchups and workloads rather than pairing them with specific pitchers.
As for Sandlin, who’s back with the Sox, Getz emphasized the importance of having available pitchers. “We need many pitching options to manage innings. After a taxing game last night, having Sandlin provides relief. Our rotations and bullpen plans for September remain to be determined.”
