After the Indiana Fever’s 90-86 victory against the Chicago Sky, Sophie Cunningham criticized DiJonai Carrington for a controversial on-court incident. Carrington was ejected in the first half for a flagrant foul during one of Cunningham’s layup attempts.
The altercation took place when Carrington struck Cunningham in the face, resulting in her ejection. Cunningham commented on the incident, suggesting that Carrington’s actions were unnecessary and perhaps attention-seeking. She stated that Carrington had no reason for such behavior, implying it was intentional.
Post-ejection, Carrington posted on social media, tagging the Indiana Fever with the phrase “White Privilege.” Cunningham dismissed the idea that the ejection was racially motivated, citing a similar incident last year when she was ejected for comparable actions.
Fever coach Stephanie White agreed with the ejection decision, noting the foul’s severity. However, she defended Carrington’s competitive nature, attributing the incident to a lack of intent to cause harm rather than malicious intent.
Carrington’s current coach, Tyler Marsh, also defended her, stating he initially saw no justification for a flagrant 2 after reviewing the incident. Marsh and White both refrained from commenting on Carrington’s provocative social media statement.
The incident occurred against a backdrop of broader political and cultural tensions. Cunningham has been a focal point in the debate over protecting women’s sports. Protests for and against her stance took place outside the game venue.
Carrington has faced accusations of unsportsmanlike behavior before. During the 2024 season, she had incidents with Fever players, including an eye-poking incident with Caitlin Clark. Despite previous confrontations, Carrington insists on playing aggressively but fairly.
Beyond basketball, Carrington has been vocal about political issues, opposing some Trump administration policies and wearing politically charged apparel. Her activism has attracted both support and criticism.
