Colombian President Aims to Revitalize Energy Sector
The Colombian President, Abelardo de la Espriella, has promised to rejuvenate the nation’s oil and gas industry, restore Ecopetrol, and reinforce the electricity system. He emphasized that energy security would be fundamental to his administration.
Energy Transition Commitment
During his inauguration, de la Espriella expressed commitment to an energy transition, moving from oil, gas, and coal to renewable sources like wind and solar power. He stressed, however, that this transition should not undermine the oil and gas sector.
I believe in the energy transition. But that transition must be built from strength, not from weakness, from self-sufficiency and not from dependence.
His statements mark a significant change from the policies of former President Gustavo Petro, who halted new oil and gas exploration contracts while promoting renewable energy and the protection of the Amazon.
Petro’s administration held an international summit in Santa Marta, focusing on moving away from fossil fuels. In contrast, de la Espriella is committed to expanding oil and gas production, reversing Petro’s key energy policies.
Focus on Energy Security
De la Espriella called energy security a crucial aspect of national sovereignty. He argued that leaving natural resources undeveloped would hinder Colombia’s long-term prosperity. He prioritized rebuilding Ecopetrol, a significant state-owned oil company.
His administration intends to authorize fracking under strict technical and environmental standards and expand exploration to address declining reserves, secure energy, and entice investment.
The president also warned that the country’s energy system faces a critical situation, noting diminishing reserves, postponed projects, and increasing electricity demand. The looming El Nino weather pattern, which causes drought and reduces hydroelectric power, adds urgency to these efforts.
The El Nino phenomenon won’t wait for us. To overcome it, it is imperative to implement urgent solutions.
