Complications in Max Miller’s Reelection Amid Resignation Calls

Representative Max Miller’s path to reelection has become more complex after a crucial Ohio deadline passed, cementing the embattled Republican congressman on the November ballot. This development comes amid increasing demands for his resignation within his party.

Miller, representing Ohio’s 7th Congressional District, faces growing scrutiny over domestic abuse allegations made by his ex-wife, Emily Moreno. He has consistently denied these claims. Newsweek reached out to Miller for comments.

Despite pressure from notable Republicans concerned about retaining the seat, Miller chose not to withdraw before the deadline. This deadline would have permitted state Republicans to choose another nominee. Under Ohio law, party officials needed at least two days’ notice to convene and select a replacement, requiring Miller’s withdrawal by that Saturday. By holding his position, Miller left Republican leaders without a chance to nominate an alternative candidate before the replacement cut-off.

Demand for Resignation

The missed deadline coincides with growing Republican criticism of Miller. On Sunday, Indiana Senator Jim Banks suggested Miller should resign and end his reelection bid should the allegations hold true. Referring to the accusations as “deeply troubling,” Banks stated on NBC’s Meet the Press that Miller should step aside if risking a Republican-held House seat.

“The allegations against him are terrible. If he’s jeopardizing his congressional seat, which could affect our majority in the House, he should remove himself,” Banks said.

Banks further expressed sympathy for the family, urging a focus on the welfare of the children involved and hoping for justice.

Opposition within the party continues. Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno, Emily Moreno’s father, voiced that Miller “should not serve” and labeled him a “danger” to his daughter.

“If there are any basic standards of character required to hold elected office, Max Miller fails them,” Moreno stated.

Ohio Senator Jon Husted also advocated for Miller’s resignation, suggesting discontinuing his campaign to prioritize his daughter’s best interest.

Montana Senator Tim Sheehy criticized Miller, calling him a “degenerate sociopath” following allegations surrounding abuse of his daughter’s favorite toy, which Miller denied.

“This guy is clearly a degenerate sociopath. Max should step aside,” Sheehy posted.

House Ethics Committee Involvement

The controversy garnered attention from national GOP leaders. Reports from CNN indicated efforts to persuade Miller to end his campaign, fearing damage to a previously favorable district. Miller communicated with President Donald Trump, who warned about re-election challenges.

Trump, endorsing Miller, commented aboard Air Force One that he would investigate the situation.

“I’m going to look at it. So far, it’s accusations,” Trump remarked.

The House Ethics Committee has launched an investigation into potential domestic violence or misconduct. Miller requested this review, claiming transparency and a desire to clear his name.

House Speaker Mike Johnson acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations but reserved judgment until the committee completes its investigation.

Miller firmly rejected all accusations, attributing them to contentious divorce and custody disputes. He remains committed to his campaign, aiming to secure reelection in November. No criminal charges have been filed related to these allegations.

With the deadline for replacement lapsed, Republicans now face a challenging scenario. Without an unexpected withdrawal, Miller is positioned as the GOP nominee in a contest viewed as increasingly threatening to the party’s efforts to safeguard its House majority.
