Criticism of the Democratic National Committee’s 2024 Election Report

The Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) long-awaited 2024 election report faced criticism from New York Times opinion columnist Michelle Goldberg. She described the report as “mysterious,” “anticlimactic,” and “ridiculous.” After months of internal drama, the report was released but did not meet expectations.

Goldberg noted that the report lacked substance and failed to address significant issues. It was surprising to her that important topics like “Israel” and “Gaza” were absent from the 192-page document. The report provided little insight into why the Democratic Party lost support from Black and Latino men or how it failed to connect with irregular voters. She even suggested that artificial intelligence might have produced a better report.

“The document, it’s now clear, was kept under wraps not because it was impolitic, but because it’s a disaster,” Goldberg wrote.

Ken Martin, the DNC Chair, faced criticism for downplaying the challenge of releasing the report. Initially, he had plans to make it public but later backtracked, causing suspicion and fascination around the document.

Former Democratic megadonors also criticized the report, calling it a waste of time and stating that the reasons for the party’s losses were obvious. Many believed that Martin was attempting to shield Vice President Kamala Harris for future political races. Speculations arose that the autopsy’s existence was even in question at one point.

Other commentators like Ramesh Ponnuru from The Washington Post pointed out significant omissions. There were no mentions of concerns about President Joe Biden’s age, the border crisis, or the party’s waning appeal among religious voters. It did not address controversial views such as support for taxpayer-funded sex changes for certain groups.

Eventually, the report was made public, initially covered by CNN. It highlighted the party’s weakened infrastructure due to declining voter registration and insufficient support for state parties. It also called for more focus on voters from Middle America and the South.

Within the party, the report has resulted in tensions. Ken Martin publicly distanced himself from it, stating that it did not meet his standards. He further mentioned that the document was released unedited for transparency, despite his dissatisfaction with the content.
