AOC Reveals Egg-Freezing Decision and Critiques Reproductive Policies

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., announced that she is freezing her eggs, sharing personal insights in Instagram Story videos. She explained that this procedure gives her more control over her future while critiquing Trump’s reproductive health policies.

The progressive representative, known as a ‘Squad’ member, shared the videos on Saturday. She highlighted her years of contemplation and financial preparation for this fertility preservation step.

Ocasio-Cortez emphasized her decision to openly discuss the process due to a lack of education on women’s reproductive health and family planning options. She explained her decision as follows:

I have made the decision to start freezing my eggs. I was weighing it for a very long time, and I think that I was saving for it for a very long time.

First elected to Congress at age 28, Ocasio-Cortez described the challenge of making significant life choices in the public eye, unlike many who have more privacy. She shared behind-the-scenes content on the fertility preservation journey, aiming to normalize discussions about fertility, pregnancy, menopause, and women’s health issues.

Ocasio-Cortez critiqued the lack of education on puberty, pregnancy, menopause, and conditions like PCOS, expressing the need for more representation of women’s choices in life.

This is a choice that I am making to feel more in control of my life. If people want to make assumptions about my decision, let them make those assumptions. I feel empowered to make this choice.

She acknowledged the privilege of accessing such procedures and noted technological advancements making egg freezing more affordable. Addressing political aspects, Ocasio-Cortez highlighted a ‘political tax’ linked to disclosing personal decisions. She argued that female politicians often face unjust scrutiny concerning family planning compared to male counterparts.

She criticized the Trump administration’s stance on women’s reproductive choices, adding:

In the political context that we’re in, in an administration that is dedicated to politicizing women’s bodies and taking our choices away from us and punishing us around decisions to be pregnant or not be pregnant. Frankly, this administration has made pregnancy more dangerous than probably at any point in the last 30-plus years.

Ocasio-Cortez stated the importance of women reclaiming power and speaking out. Fox News reached out to the White House for comments on her statements.

The announcement sparked criticism from conservatives, including Turning Point USA spokesman Andrew Kolvet. He expressed concern over the progressive emphasis on careers over family, suggesting it contributes to declining fertility rates.

Ocasio-Cortez, engaged to Riley Roberts since May 2022, previously warned about climate change crisis timelines in 2019. Her egg-freezing announcement coincides with her plans to document parts of the process, including hormone injections and medication preparations.

She plans to continue sharing her experience, highlighting women’s capability to balance diverse aspects of their lives. Ocasio-Cortez expressed empowerment and resilience in managing multiple roles, stating:

I’m gonna take my shot in the green room before my interview. Because women can do anything.
