Controversial Foul Sparks Debate in Fever vs. Sky Game

During a recent game, Sophie Cunningham of the Indiana Fever encountered a surprising setback. After taking a forearm to the head, her own coach defended the player responsible. The incident occurred in the Fever’s 90-86 victory over the Chicago Sky.

During a first-quarter play, DiJonai Carrington of the Chicago Sky made contact with Cunningham’s head and neck as Cunningham attempted a layup. The referees reviewed the incident, classified it as a Flagrant 2 foul, and ejected Carrington from the game.

Cunningham shared her perspective on the play, stating, Clearly, I think it was like unnecessary. I’ve never really spoken to her and have no beef with her, but I guess she has some pent up stuff. So get your s— off. That’s fine. I can take it … Yeah, it’s intentional.

Despite the circumstances, Fever coach Stephanie White viewed the incident differently. Yeah, I mean, look, it was a hard foul. I don’t think that DiJonai intentionally came out to get her across the neck like she did. But it did happen and I thought it was the right call, White stated.

White further elaborated on Carrington’s playing style, saying, But you know, one of the things about Nay is that she’s gonna play her butt off, man. She’s gonna compete. Nobody’s gonna go walking in for a layup. And so, I don’t oppose the hard foul. But I also don’t think that she intentionally went for the neck.

This perspective surprised some, given that Carrington was a former player under White at the Connecticut Sun in 2023 and 2024 before White returned to the Fever. This history may have influenced White’s comments about her former player.

Cunningham was not convinced by White’s interpretation. I don’t even know her. She wasn’t even on the team last year when all that was going on, she said, adding that the game’s visibility seemed to draw attention-seeking behavior.

Carrington’s actions did not end with the foul. After her ejection, she posted White Privilege on a social media platform and tagged the Fever. She did not clarify whether this message was directed at Cunningham, the officials, or the organization.

Cunningham rejected the notion that race played a role in her ejection. I think the league is taking care of that. This has nothing to do with race. Last year, I did the same thing and I got kicked out. And I deserved to be kicked out. There’s no reason even to play that card, she explained.

White chose not to comment on Carrington’s social media remark. However, Cunningham may have benefited from more robust support from her coach, given the incident.
