Taiwan has issued a stark warning to the United States regarding China’s ambitions in the region. This comes as former President Donald Trump considers a proposed $14 billion arms package for Taiwan. Alexander Yui, Taiwan’s top diplomat, emphasized Taiwan’s role as a key defense line against China’s broader goals. Taiwan’s semiconductor industry, responsible for 90% of the world’s advanced chips, makes US support vital.
In the days following Trump’s summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, China deployed over 100 vessels around Taiwan. Taiwan’s National Security Council Secretary General Joseph Wu confirmed these movements. “Our ISR/intel shows that the PRC has deployed over 100 vessels around the 1st Island Chain shortly after the Beijing summit,” he stated. Wu emphasized that China is destabilizing the region and threatening peace.
“In this part of the world, China is the one & only PROBLEM wrecking the Status Quo & threatening regional peace & stability,” Wu concluded.
A graphic released by Taiwan showed significant Chinese naval deployments in the South China Sea, East China Sea, and around Taiwan and The Philippines.
Shortly after Trump’s visit to Beijing, Acting U.S. Navy Secretary Hung Cao announced a temporary pause in weapons shipments to Taiwan. Cao explained this is to ensure adequate munitions for other operations. “Right now we’re doing a pause in order to make sure we have the munitions we need for Epic Fury,” he testified at a Senate hearing.
U.S. lawmakers approved the $14 billion arms sale to Taiwan in January. However, Trump has not yet signed off on it. Taiwanese officials indicated they were not informed of any delays, according to reports.
The pause follows discussions during the Trump-Xi summit where Chinese officials highlighted Taiwan as the primary issue in US-China relations. According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, President Xi warned that mishandling the Taiwan issue could lead to conflicts, endangering the bilateral relationship.
The U.S. Navy experienced a tense encounter in the Taiwan Strait when a Chinese navy ship cut across the path of the USS Chung-Hoon, forcing it to slow down to avoid a collision.
Fox News contacted the White House, Taiwanese government, and Chinese Foreign Ministry for more comments on the situation.
