Education Department Faces Stalled Civil Rights Cases

The Education Department had engaged in discussions with numerous districts during the concluding phases of the Biden administration. However, these cases have encountered delays since the current administration took office.

Recently, a Michigan mother submitted a complaint to the Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights. She described racial harassment that has deeply affected her middle-school daughter.

By the time Black History Month commenced at Chesaning Middle School in Michigan in 2024, the only Black girl in the fifth grade had suffered repeated racial insults. On the school bus, she was referred to as a “monkey.” Other students used racial slurs against her and compared her skin to “burnt chicken.”
