Discovery of Ancient Shipwreck Unveils Historical Insights

“It’s hard to explain what it feels like to think that we’re among the first humans, after nearly twenty centuries, to see that place again,” stated Giacomo de Mola in a video on Facebook. De Mola is a member of the team that uncovered a shipwreck filled with valuable artifacts.

Hundreds of clay jars, known as amphorae, were discovered inside the wreck alongside lead anchor stocks and other items. These artifacts might originate from different regions of the ancient world. They include possible North African amphorae and a Neo-Punic amphora, according to de Mola’s separate Facebook post.

Simon Stoddart, a professor of archaeology at Britain’s University of Cambridge, noted that this discovery could significantly aid in reconstructing ancient trading routes and creating a historical risk map of the Mediterranean. The vessel is estimated to be from the first or second century.

In collaboration with previous finds, experts from the Italian Ministry of Culture aim to explore the broader context of ancient maritime activities. Stoddart, although not part of the discovery team, mentioned to NBC News that the shipwreck’s depth adds to its significance and rarity. He emphasized the difficulties of ethically recording and retrieving artifacts from such depths due to the need for specialized equipment.

As the amphorae and other items were found at a deep underwater site, Stoddart remarked that maintaining secrecy is vital until the practicality of excavation and proper resourcing are settled. Police plan to continue documenting the site to determine suitable protective measures. The objective is to preserve these historical artifacts on the seabed and make them accessible to the public.

For de Mola, the emotional impact of this discovery is immense. He expressed, “This time, we didn’t just find a shipwreck. We found a piece of our history.”
