Jay Feely, known for his role as a kicker in the NFL and later as a CBS broadcaster, has decided to step into the political arena. Feely expressed a long-standing interest in politics, which intensified following an assassination attempt on President Trump during a campaign event. His wife, aware of his political ambitions for two decades, supported his decision after mutual prayers.
During his career, Feely amassed considerable wealth and worked in a stable position at CBS. Now, he aims to represent Arizona’s 1st Congressional District as a Republican. The seat, previously held by Rep. Andy Biggs, is open as Biggs runs for governor. Trump’s endorsement elevated Feely during the primaries, positioning him against Democrat Amish Shah in the general election.
Feely and Shah share an unexpected connection: Shah served as a New York Jets team doctor while Feely was part of the team. Feely acknowledged this discovery, emphasizing the differing political policies between them, which will be key in the election.
Describing himself as a conservative, Feely advocates for Trump’s “America First” policies. He believes his NFL experience prepared him to address complex political issues hand-in-hand with diverse people. He recalls his time with fellow Giants players LaVar Arrington and Brandon Short engaging in nightly political discussions, valuing the diverse interactions he had in sports.
Feely encourages other athletes to explore politics. He cites athletes like Drew Brees and Ben Watson, whom he personally encouraged to run for office. Reflecting on his experiences in high-pressure situations, Feely finds the political field somewhat natural.
He notes a crucial crossroads in sports and politics, considering the NFL’s broadcasting and international ambitions amidst legislative pressures. Feely disagrees with most Republicans on college sports protection, suggesting a collective bargaining agreement as a remedy. He stresses the importance of balancing equality while safeguarding women’s and Olympic sports.
If elected, Feely plans to prioritize service over personal gain. He seeks to extend the opportunities he gained from football into politics, aiming to impact people positively.
