Abdul El-Sayed Responds to Hasan Piker’s 9/11 Comments and Cancel Culture Debate

Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, addressed controversial remarks made by Hasan Piker, a far-left internet personality. On ‘Meet the Press’, NBC’s Kristen Welker asked El-Sayed if Piker, who had previously joined him on the campaign trail, would be welcomed back. El-Sayed acknowledged the comments were ‘dumb’ but emphasized the challenges posed by cancel culture.

El-Sayed clarified, ‘Of course, it was a dumb statement, and I think Hasan himself would say that.’ He said Piker had disavowed the remarks, and rather than focusing on this, he preferred concentrating on his campaign against Republican Mike Rogers. He stressed the need for accountability for his own words and criticized the nation’s current preoccupation with cancel culture.

Senator Bernie Sanders, a progressive voice in the Democratic Party, had also termed Piker’s comments as ‘dumb’. Sanders, in an interview with CNN, suggested that the party should avoid slip-ups in judgment associated with such statements.

Speaking on the matter, psychotherapist Jonathan Alpert remarked that referencing cancel culture can be evasive. El-Sayed’s acknowledgment of Piker’s remarks as inappropriate, while subsequently arguing against cancel culture, drew comments from Alpert. ‘You can’t have it both ways,’ he observed, emphasizing that scrutiny over judgments like maintaining controversial associations is fair.

Alpert further noted that calling all criticism ‘cancel culture’ is a simplification. While some criticism can be unjust, addressing tough questions about judgment is part of a politician’s role. According to Alpert, El-Sayed’s shifting the narrative to cancel culture is a psychological tactic, deflecting the core concern to portray critics as the problem.
