Trump Advocates for Permanent Daylight Saving Time to Boost Safety and Economy

President Donald Trump has called on Congress to approve the Sunshine Protection Act, asserting it could lower crime rates related to murder and robbery.

Since World War One, the United States has advanced clocks during warmer months to extend evening daylight, known as Daylight Saving Time (DST). In autumn, clocks revert by an hour as most regions resume standard time.

The House of Representatives passed the legislation in mid-July, with 308 members in favor and 117 against. The Senate is now reviewing it, and Trump is eager to enact it if it passes.

Trump stated on Truth Social, “For many years, the vast majority of Americans have sought to make Daylight Saving Time permanent, but no administration has achieved this, until now. I am proud to announce that the House has passed the bill, and it awaits Senate approval.”

He continued, “Leading studies in medicine, crime, and economics indicate that ending the biannual clock change, providing an additional hour of natural sunlight in the evenings, will help reduce robbery and murder rates, car accidents (especially involving pedestrians), and decrease risks of cardiac issues, stroke, and seasonal depression. It will enhance safety for children walking home, increase family time, strongly support extracurricular activities and benefit sports, fitness, tourism, retail, and restaurant sectors. Additionally, it will save on energy bills due to the extra hour of daylight.”

Trump emphasized, “In essence, let’s maintain the current arrangement and never change again. This is an issue uniting Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. I urge Republican Senators to pass the Sunshine Protection Act immediately.”
