Trump Administration Alters State Department Diversity Guidelines
The State Department under President Donald Trump’s leadership is shifting its focus away from the Biden-era Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) priorities. The new approach steps away from promoting DEIA agendas in diplomatic discussions and interactions with foreign officials.
Tommy Pigott, a spokesperson for the State Department, emphasized that diplomatic efforts should primarily advocate for America’s national interests rather than political ideologies. The previous guidelines directed foreign service personnel to incorporate DEIA topics in high-level talks, especially in countries where these issues are significant concerns.
Documents obtained revealed that the Biden administration previously required employees to address social inclusion and equality matters during bilateral dialogues. These guidelines also influenced personnel evaluations, with a focus on how staff integrated DEIA policies into their work. Under Trump’s administration, these criteria no longer affect performance reviews, according to confirmations from Fox News Digital.
Further, these Biden-era documents encouraged frontline offices to engage actively in ‘allyship’. Employees were expected to speak out against bias and work to eliminate it across various spheres, including race, ethnicity, gender, and disability. Additionally, it was mandatory for employees to independently pursue DEIA knowledge rather than rely on colleagues from underrepresented groups for education.
Each department was expected to create or support a DEIA Council to foster inclusivity. Questions posed in these documents included how biases were addressed within missions and how localized DEIA training programs were implemented for both U.S. and locally employed staff.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio plays a key role in implementing this strategy. He has expressed the importance of keeping diplomacy focused without diverging into political dynamics. Under this direction, the State Department aims to streamline diplomatic training to enhance skillsets aligned with America’s core diplomatic challenges.
