Hugh Laurie and Sophie Cunningham on Transgender Athletes in Women’s Sports

Hugh Laurie, the renowned English actor and comedian, voiced his perspective on a contentious issue: transgender athletes in women’s sports. Known for his lead role in ‘House,’ Laurie did not hold back in his expression. On social media, he stated clearly that he opposes men competing against women. He responded to a post by writer and transgender activist Graham Linehan with a blunt message.

Laurie wrote, ‘Firstly, f— off; secondly no, I don’t believe men should compete against women. I thought I’d made that pretty clear.’ This response echoed his sentiments against the idea. His assertive stance followed Linehan’s dare to support WNBA star Sophie Cunningham.

Cunningham had also expressed her opposition to men competing in women’s sports. Laurie’s reply to Linehan reaffirmed his support for Cunningham. He stated, ‘You started it. ‘Cowardly’ to ‘f— off’ is the going rate of exchange around here. And yes, I support Sophie Cunningham. And you, some of the time.’

The outspoken Cunningham faced criticism after commenting in an ESPN article. She clarified her position, noting that she wishes to protect young female athletes. Cunningham explained, ‘I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that.’ I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.’

Cunningham added that she finds herself in the middle of the debate, acknowledging points on both sides. Despite this, she maintained her focus on fairness for female athletes. Laurie’s and Cunningham’s views align with the sentiments of many Americans. A New York Times poll from March 2025 reported that 79% of Americans believe men should not compete in women’s sports.

Both Laurie and Cunningham have shared their opinions openly, highlighting a broader conversation on fairness and equity in sports.
