Venomous Snake Removed from Arkansas Football Player’s Helmet

During a routine football practice, a player from Maumelle High School in Arkansas discovered a disturbing surprise inside his helmet: a 2-foot-long venomous snake.

After warmups, the student sensed unusual movements within his headgear. Upon presenting his helmet to an assistant coach, the source of the disturbance was revealed to be a cottonmouth snake, a species identified as the second-most venomous in the state.

The snake was so reluctant to leave the helmet that police officers had to use water to coax it out and safely secure it in a bag. Animal services later arrived, confirmed the snake’s identity, and relocated it to a wooded area away from the school.

Chris Davis, director of animal services, commented on the player’s close call, noting the helmet had been worn for nearly an hour without incident. “It was unreal,” Davis expressed, emphasizing the importance of capturing the unusual event in photos.

Following the incident, the player resumed practice with a different helmet. The head coach took the opportunity to remind the team to thoroughly inspect their equipment, highlighting the need to check for insects or other dangers.

The Maumelle Animal Shelter shared on Facebook that everyone involved was unharmed, reiterating the advice to examine outdoor gear like helmets, shoes, and bags for hidden wildlife, as these items can serve as attractive shelters for various critters.
