Jamal Adams Faces Setback with Knee Injury in Vikings Game

Former New York Jets first-round pick Jamal Adams returned to MetLife Stadium on Sunday, aiming to secure his place with the Minnesota Vikings. Yet expectations dimmed quickly when he sustained a knee injury, leading to his removal from the field during the Vikings’ 13-10 victory.

Adams injured himself while covering New York Giants receiver Calvin Austin III. While attempting to manage Austin’s route, Adams collapsed, indicating a non-contact injury. He was unable to get up quickly.

A cart transported Adams to the Vikings’ locker room. Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell remarked during an interview that the initial assessment of Adams’ knee injury was “not good.”

“In a brief time, Jamal has shown remarkable dedication. You feel his passion daily. It’s disheartening, given his potential role and the experience he brought,” O’Connell noted.

Adams’ performance was notable before the injury, contributing significantly to the defensive efforts. His absence underscores the injury’s seriousness.

Adams joined the Vikings shortly before training camp started on July 28, aware of the competition for a roster position. This marks his 10th season in the NFL, a period marked by significant achievements.

Adams gained prominence with the Jets, becoming a regular after they selected him sixth overall from LSU in 2017. His accolades include two Pro Bowl appearances and a First Team All-Pro selection in 2019. He excelled with 6.5 sacks, 75 tackles, two forced fumbles, one interception, and seven passes defended across 14 games that season.

Following that standout year, the Jets traded Adams to the Seattle Seahawks, where he spent four years. He later split time in 2024 with both the Tennessee Titans and Detroit Lions before joining the Las Vegas Raiders in 2025.

Last season, Adams transitioned from safety to linebacker, with plans for a similar role with the Vikings this year. Despite this setback, he views himself as adaptable on defense, capable of various responsibilities.

Adams now looks to the outcome of further evaluations, hoping for a favorable recovery despite the typically severe implications of non-contact knee injuries in athletes.
