Lani Pallister Makes History by Defeating Katie Ledecky in 800m Freestyle

Australian swimmer Lani Pallister achieved a significant milestone by defeating Katie Ledecky in the 800m freestyle at the Pan Pacific Championships. This marked the end of Ledecky’s streak of 13 international championship gold medals that began in 2012. Pallister completed the race in 8 minutes and 6.10 seconds, finishing 1.16 seconds ahead of Ledecky in Irvine, California.

Pallister took an early lead and maintained it throughout the race despite a strong challenge from Ledecky between the 700 and 750-meter marks, where Ledecky reduced the gap significantly. Reflecting on her performance, Pallister described the crucial moment when she saw Ledecky closing in.

“I saw her coming on the 15th 50 (between 700 and 750 meters), and I was like, holy s—,” Pallister said.

In her post-race comments, Ledecky expressed satisfaction with her performance, considering it her best swim of the meet.

Pallister’s victory was not without its challenges. Leading up to the race, she felt the most nervous she had ever been. Previously, at the 2025 World Championships, Pallister narrowly missed gold but continued to push the competition at the Pan Pacifics. She also performed strongly in other events, securing victories against Ledecky for the first time in various distances.

Ledecky, having dominated the 800m event since her 2012 Olympic win and collected multiple Olympic and world titles, acknowledged Pallister’s accomplishment. Pallister, who admired Ledecky from a young age, credited her for elevating women’s distance swimming.

Katie is “a dominant force,” Pallister stated on NBC Sports, “Without her, we wouldn’t have women’s distance swimming in the place it is now.”

Despite Pallister’s success, Ledecky has historically rarely been defeated in the 800m free. Her last loss before this event occurred in a small Florida meet two years earlier.

Looking ahead to the 2028 Olympics, the 800m free is seen as a pivotal event for Ledecky, with the opportunity for her to achieve a rare fifth consecutive Olympic victory in the same event.

“If it’s a year to have a not-so-good meet, this is the year to have it,” Ledecky said.

Additional highlights from the Pan Pacs included Kate Douglass breaking the 50m freestyle world record and participating in the U.S. women’s 4x100m medley relay, while China’s Yu Yiting set a Championship Record in the 200m individual medley. Australian swimmer Sam Short also impressed by sweeping the 400m, 800m, and 1500m freestyle events.
